Why Total Focus and Real-World Experience Make 14 Days All You Need

EMT in 14 days?! There’s no way you can learn how to be an EMT in 14 days. Yes, we’ve heard it a thousand times before. The first thing I would say is no, it’s not for everyone. It’s for people who know what they want and have the drive and motivation to go get it. The second thing I would say is, I did it. We’ve had over a hundred students in the past year do it, all while maintaining above average National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians pass rates.

So how is a 14-day EMT course different from a standard, semester long class at my community college (besides the obvious timeframe)? The first thing that comes to mind is focus. When I went through EMT school, years ago, I selected to go through a 14-day course. The first thing I noticed was that, while it was challenging (long days, etc), I was completely focused on one thing. I wasn’t worried about work, my girlfriend, binge watching the latest TV series, weekend plans, or mindlessly scrolling social media while I should be studying. Completely dedicating two weeks to pursue learning a new skill set with no distractions drowned out the other things in life that always fight for your attention and I was able to truly keep my learning priority number one. Don’t get me wrong, it was hard, but anything worth doing is hard. Plus, our students go immediately form learning their skills straight to the field where they put them into practice. Which brings me to my next point…

In EMS, experience is king. While knowing the principles behind why we do the things we do is extremely important, and we make sure you do, going out and getting your hands dirty (or bloody) is where you put it all together, put theoretical concepts into practice, and turn your newfound skillset into an area of expertise. Work in or around EMS and providers will be quick to tell you how long they’ve worked in the field. It’s the most respected (and most treasured) credential. After all, wouldn’t you trust a medic with twenty years’ experience over a medic with two? Anyone who works in EMS will tell you that “book learning”, while important, is not what makes you a good provider, and they’re not wrong. Experience is the undisputed champion of turning the unsure, awkward EMT into a kick-ass lifesaver. So, in six months from now, you could be just getting ready to take your NREMT or you have five months of genuine field experience under your belt. (Not to mention getting paid a bit sooner, oops I guess I mentioned it)

So, if you think you can handle long days and long hours (welcome to EMS) and you’re serious about what you want to accomplish, join us in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex to get rocking and rolling.
